Approach:
We are landscape architects devoted to excellence in the planning and design of outdoor spaces. We seek clients who are interested in us as collaborative partners and in the thoughtful, creative problem solving that is our hallmark.
Our projects focus on people, the environment, and connections between the two.We combine uncluttered design, horticulture, art and sciences to make meaningful and uplifting places for people to live, work and play.We are also known for our careful selection of materials, our craftsmanlike details, and innovative construction techniques that make our built work durable, elegant and still easily maintainable. We view Landscape Architecture as a craft and an art,and treat each project in that spirit.
Because we spend the time to understand the physical and cultural setting of each project, our parks and open spaces fit seamlessly within their surroundings. Our finished works do not appear"engineered",although all of the functional aspects of each project are carefully considered and resolved. We avoid a standard style or preconceived aesthetic.Instead, through careful listening,we rely upon our clients' aspirations and the unique characteristics of each site to suggest appropriate design directions. We are confident as designers in proceeding in both contemporary and more traditional directions. With staff ecologists to assist us,we are committed to promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship on every project we undertake. We are diligent in turning these concepts into reality.
To every project we bring experience, design leadership, energy, fresh imagination, and a collaborative spirit.
Sustainable Design:
Since its founding,CRJA has brought a strong sustainable design ethic to all of its projects, developing solutions that meet project needs and achieve high design standards while minimizing environmental impact. We view sustainable design not as a choice, but as an ethical imperative in the design of all our projects.
We work with all design disciplines from the start in an integrated fashion to achieve the highest degree of sustainability possible. From the planning stages to implementation,as well as the maintenance and operations of a project,we develop solutions that operations of a project,we develop solutions that encourage reduced non-renewable fuel consumption and the proper management, reuse, preservation, and enhancement of on-site resources, such as soil, water, vegetation and wildlife habitat. We employ an early consensus-building process for each project to gain buy-in from all stakeholders for sustainable solutions.Through all of this,we pursue design excellence and client satisfaction.

History:
Carol Johnson began her practice in 1959,with the encouragement of colleagues from The Architects Collaborative, where she had worked the previous year, and taking advantage of project offered her through contacts she had make as a student at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and at Wellesley Collage. It was a year when there were few women landscape architects and even fewer who headed their own practices.
Between 1959 and 1979,Carol Johnson operated her practice initially out of her apartment in Cambridge and then and out of a small office on Mount Auburn Street in Harvard Square. As the practice expanded, she moved to larger offices and hired additional employees. In 1970,the firm changed its name from Carol R.Johnson,Landscape Architect,to Carol R.Johnson&Associates to reflect the growing importance of the employees to the practice. In September of 1975,the firm was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Carol R.Johnson&Associates,Inc.Over the ensuing 45 years, the firm has grown to become one of the largest landscape architectural firms in the United States, serving a national and international clientele.
In August of 2001,the firm purchased and renovated a former molasses warehouse on Broad Street in Boston's Financial District, where it is headquartered today.Among nine Partners,Carol Johnson is Chairman of the Board, and Harry Fuller is the firm's President and Managing Partner. The firm currently numbers61.of whom 46 are landscape architects.Carol Johnson continues to bring her talent and enthusiasm for design to the firm and is an active leader on a wide range of projects. From its inception,Carol Johnson based her practice upon the traditional values of dedicated public service,an unrelenting insistence upon quality in design and construction. That philosophy remains the cornerstone of the firm's practice today.
